The 12 Best Private Jet Airports in the US: FBOs, Facilities & Tips

One of the most underappreciated advantages of private aviation is access to a network of more than 5,000 general aviation airports across the United States — compared to the roughly 500 commercial airports served by the airlines. This means you can often depart from an airport minutes from your home or office, and arrive at an airport much closer to your final destination.

But not all private airports are equal. The quality of the FBO (Fixed Base Operator) — the private terminal that handles your arrival and departure — varies enormously. Here are the 12 best private jet airports in the US, with insider notes on facilities and FBO recommendations.

East Coast

1. Teterboro Airport (KTEB) — New Jersey / New York Metro

Teterboro is the busiest private jet airport in the United States and the de facto gateway to New York City for private aviation. Located 12 miles from Midtown Manhattan, it offers faster access to the city than any commercial airport. The airport hosts several world-class FBOs including Signature Aviation and Atlantic Aviation, both offering premium lounges, concierge services, and ground transportation coordination.

Best for: New York City business travel, transatlantic connections
Top FBO: Signature Aviation TEB (recently renovated, excellent lounge)
Insider tip: Book ground transportation in advance — the Lincoln Tunnel can add 30–45 minutes during peak hours

2. Opa-locka Executive Airport (KOPF) — Miami

KOPF is the preferred private aviation gateway to Miami Beach and South Beach, located just 20 minutes from the beach. It handles significantly less traffic than Miami International and offers faster ramp-to-car times. Sheltair Aviation is the standout FBO here.

Best for: Miami Beach, Wynwood, Brickell
Top FBO: Sheltair Aviation KOPF
Insider tip: KOPF has a 10pm noise curfew — plan arrivals accordingly

3. Palm Beach International (KPBI) — Palm Beach

While technically a commercial airport, KPBI has an outstanding private aviation terminal at Signature Aviation that rivals dedicated private airports. It's the preferred arrival point for Palm Beach, Jupiter, and the Treasure Coast. Shorter taxi times and a less congested ramp than Miami make it a favorite for South Florida travel.

4. Westchester County Airport (KHPN) — New York Suburbs

For travelers heading to Greenwich, Stamford, White Plains, or the Hamptons, KHPN is often more convenient than Teterboro. It's 30 minutes from Midtown and serves as an alternative when KTEB is congested. Million Air and Signature both operate excellent FBOs here.

Southeast

5. Signature Aviation at Fort Lauderdale Executive (KFXE)

KFXE is the private aviation hub for Fort Lauderdale, Boca Raton, and northern Broward County. It's less congested than KOPF and offers excellent facilities. The Signature FBO here is consistently rated among the best in the Southeast.

6. Peachtree City Falcon Field (KFFC) — Atlanta

For Atlanta travelers, KFFC offers a quieter alternative to the busy Dekalb-Peachtree Airport (KPDK). Located 30 miles south of downtown, it's ideal for travelers heading to the southern suburbs or Hartsfield-Jackson connections.

Midwest

7. Chicago Executive Airport (KPWK) — Chicago

KPWK is the gold standard for Chicago private aviation. Located in Wheeling, Illinois, it's 25 miles northwest of downtown and serves as the primary private jet gateway for the North Shore, Lake Forest, and Chicago's western suburbs. The Signature Aviation FBO here is exceptional.

Best for: North Shore Chicago, corporate headquarters in the western suburbs
Top FBO: Signature Aviation PWK

8. Indianapolis Executive Airport (KTYQ)

A quieter alternative to Indianapolis International for private aviation, KTYQ offers fast ramp access and excellent FBO service through Indy Air. Ideal for Indianapolis Motor Speedway events and corporate travel to the Indianapolis tech corridor.

Texas

9. Dallas Love Field (KDAL)

Love Field is the preferred private aviation gateway to downtown Dallas, located just 6 miles from the CBD. Signature Aviation operates a premium FBO here with excellent facilities. For travelers heading to Uptown, the Design District, or downtown Dallas, Love Field beats DFW by 30–45 minutes.

10. Houston Executive Airport (KTME)

KTME is the private aviation hub for the Energy Corridor and Katy, Texas — home to dozens of major energy company headquarters. It's 30 miles west of downtown Houston and offers excellent facilities through Jet Aviation.

West Coast

11. Van Nuys Airport (KVNY) — Los Angeles

Van Nuys is the busiest general aviation airport in the world by operations and the primary private jet gateway to Los Angeles. Located in the San Fernando Valley, it offers faster access to Beverly Hills, Bel Air, and the Westside than LAX. Multiple world-class FBOs operate here, including Signature, Clay Lacy, and Atlantic Aviation.

Best for: Beverly Hills, Bel Air, Malibu, Studio City
Top FBO: Clay Lacy Aviation (iconic, celebrity-friendly, exceptional service)
Insider tip: VNY has strict noise abatement procedures — departures after 10pm require special approval

12. Scottsdale Airport (KSDL) — Phoenix/Scottsdale

KSDL is the preferred private aviation gateway to Scottsdale, Paradise Valley, and North Phoenix. It's 30 miles northeast of Phoenix Sky Harbor and offers significantly faster ground times. The Scottsdale Airport is home to several excellent FBOs and is the arrival point of choice for golf trips to TPC Scottsdale and Troon North.

How to Choose the Right Airport

When booking a charter, your Tidal Jets broker will recommend the optimal departure and arrival airports based on your origin, destination, aircraft type, and schedule. In many cases, using a smaller private airport saves 30–60 minutes compared to a major commercial airport — even accounting for the drive to the FBO.

The key factors in airport selection are: proximity to your actual origin and destination, FBO quality and amenities, noise curfews and operational restrictions, and availability of fuel and handling services for your specific aircraft type.
